Red Roads to Runways tells the fascinating story of the Summerside Air Force base in Prince Edward Island in a beautiful coffee table book format. It chronicles the base's WWII construction as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, its post-war transition, Cold War operations, and its activities in peacetime. Gray has interwoven humorous personal stories with historical facts to demonstrate how the base and town of Summerside supported each other. He also provides interesting but little-known facts regarding the role of the base on the world stage as well as a myriad of heroic feats executed on a daily basis by military personnel. The book is illustrated with paintings by Summerside native, Rob Arsenault.
Larry Gray served in the RCAF for 24 years as a radio officer/navigator with numerous postings in Canada (including seven years in Summerside) and abroad. He spent his secondary duties as editor of base newspapers. Since retirement, Larry has worked for the Royal Canadian Legion pursing disability pensions for injured service personnel and veterans, and was appointed to The Veterans Review and Appeal Board in Charlottetown. Larry and his wife live in Carleton Place, ON and Stanley Bridge, PEI.
