Call for Volunteers

The CAHS National is looking for volunteers to help contact aviation related companies in an effort to greatly increase our corporate support. We need individuals who can dedicate a couple of hours a week to making phone calls and sending emails.  Contacts in the aviation corporation community and good salesmanship skills would be a strong asset, and we also need French speakers to communicate with the corporations in Quebec.  If you are available to help with a corporate sponsorship drive, then please contact Rachel Lea Heide at treasurer@cahs.ca.

.
The CAHS is also looking for a volunteer to register all CAHS logos as trademarks. If you have professional experience with this process and would like to volunteer, please contact Caitlin McWilliams at cahs.newsletter@gmail.com.

CAHS Journal

CAHS Journal 51-2 arrived in mailboxes and inboxes in November, along with CAHS National President's Message concurrent with this edition, and a letter from the CAHS national Treasurer All members are urged to take the time to read the President's message and the Treasurer's letter.
.
CAHS Fall 2013 cover1Journal 51-3 is slated to be with the proofreaders between Christmas and the end of the first week of the New Year and likely to go to print within the first half of January (within a week of the proofreading results being applied). Immediately on being informed that it has been subsequently mailed from the mailing house, we will be emailing the PDF version to all paid-up 2013 Online Members. Note that the cover for 51-3 is by W/C (retired) James Francis "Stocky" Edwards, one of the 2013 CAHF inductees.
In this issue, look forward to the following featured articles:
  • The conclusion of the Wayne Saunders series on Bev Shenstone;
  • An archaeological point of perspective on a Yukon SB-17G crash, and;
  • John Chalmer's piece on the 2013 inductees into Canada's Aviation Hall of Fame.
The way is also clear for us to get Journal 51-4 (Winter 2013 – which is also a current work in progress) to press either late January or early February. With the first three weeks of the new year being the traditional "issue window" for the final Journal number for the preceding year, we will then have realized our goal of bringing the production schedule up to date with the "cover date", and are set to maintain this synchronization going forward through 2014 and beyond. The first issue of the 2014 publishing year – Journal 52-1 – is slated to go to print in early March 2014.

CAHS Online

New on the CAHS newsreel:

This month we feature a piece by G. R. Waver on "A Memorable and Festive Season" and his Christmas experiences as a Canadian airman during the Second World War overseas. G. R. writes:

"On the way back to base, I received a coded Morse Code message instructing our squadron to divert to an airfield by the name of Earls Colne. It appears that we're going to miss the big Christmas Eve party in our mess, What else can go wrong?

[...] So how does one go about enjoying the Xmas festivities? Well, so far, we’ve had to go on a bombing operation. We had to take off in fog. We had a rough time over the target. We were diverted to Earls Colne; the “Beer Keg” fiasco. And now the sad news about Glenn Miller. Merry Christmas."

Getting More from Membership... and the Story of a Lucky Ring

In the last e-newsletter, Membership Secretary John Chalmers put forward a challenge to the CAHS to boost membership numbers. This month, John discusses the various ways you can actively make the most of your membership:

"Fellow CAHS Members,

.
Being a member of the Canadian Aviation Historical Society puts you in contact with kindred souls across our country who share an interest in our aviation heritage. However, membership can mean much more than simply paying your annual dues! For organizations to which I have belonged, I have found that contributing by more than mailing in a cheque has helped me to get more out of membership.

CAHS membership offers the opportunity to share the camaraderie of fellow members, to serve on the national or chapter executive, to participate in presentation of a topic at the annual convention or at a chapter meeting, to participate in an ad hoc committee for a one-time special event, to communicate with fellow members through the online newsletter, and to contribute articles to the CAHS Journal. There is a great deal of talent and knowledge in our membership -- and you can share yours with fellow members in several ways.

I'm always intrigued by aviation stories that come my way. They mean even more when they inspire me to do a little research and follow-up. I would like to share with you a story I wrote about a "lucky ring" that was worn by two airmen through two World Wars and eventually found its way back to family hands nearly 100 years after it went to war. Click here to read about "Wartime Luck -- the story of a lucky ring."

Wishing you good flights through history,

John Chalmers
Board member and Membership Chairman

International Plastic Modellers Society and RT

A message from Bob Migliardi, President, IPMS Canada:

"The International Plastic Modellers Society is a unique, world-wide organization of hobbyists who enjoy plastic scale modelling, primarily aviation related, and is run on a voluntary basis, "by modellers, for modellers". The Society originated in the UK in 1963, and it wasn't long before word of the Society spread around the world. The Canadian branch was founded in 1964, and today IPMS Canada is one of the larger branches of the Society.

IPMS logo

IPMS Canada's publication, RT [Random Thoughts], is a quarterly, containing 36 pages of photos, drawings, reviews, model building and conversion articles, as well as other items of modelling interest. Occasionally members receive a free special bonus item, such as a scale model markings decal sheet, with their magazine. IPMS Canada also produces an e-newsletter called beaveRTales, which is sent out in the periods between RT issues. Unlike RT, it's more ‘newsy’. Here you’ll find such things as kit, accessory and book reviews, news from various local chapters, information on new model kits, small “build” and photo articles, hints-n-tips, photos of members’ latest creations, quizzes, and whatever else the members send in. The newsletter keeps subscribers up to date on what’s happening in IPMS Canada, and the rest of the modelling world.

There are IPMS Canada Local Chapters across Canada, where members can meet, socialize, and compare notes with other modellers. Here also the public can learn something of the hobby and of IPMS activities. Most chapters have regular contests and demonstrations to help members improve their modelling skills and expand their aviation and modelling knowledge.

If you'd like to find out more about IPMS Canada, just visit our website at http://www.ipmscanada.com. There you can find out more about our national branch and what we offer, see some sampler issues of RT, and see some pictures of our members' models. If you like what you see, you can even join right there online!"

CAHS Journal Managing Editor and IPMS Canada Member Terry Higgins elaborated on the IPMS and the connection between scale model making and aviation history:

"One aspect of scale modeling that is not always apparent to the casual observer is its intimate connection to history. Many model builders spend a great amount of time and energy investigating all aspects of the history – ranging from the technical to the operational – of any given subject. In the realm of aviation modellers this can range from the broadly general to a more focused interest in a single airline, air arm, military campaign, or even a single aircraft type.

Some aviation history practitioners note that an early interest in building scale models initiated a deep an abiding interest in these avenues of history, and some (including a number of notable CAHS Members over the years), have gone on to contribute articles, illustrations, and other associated research results, to both CAHS and IPMS venues."

RT35-3 Beau article lead page

Terry would like to hear from anyone who has experienced first hand this connection between scale model making and aviation history. Meanwhile, readers are invited to pick up a copy of the recently published IPMS Canada RT Vol 35 No 3 which contains part one of Terry’s article, “The Operational Life of Beaufighter NE355, and Some of Her Relatives…” and IPMS Canada member Michael Novosad’s related article on building a detailed model of this particular aircraft, based on Terry’s research. Part two of Terry’s article, which will feature detailed finish and markings scheme illustrations, is slated to appear in an early 2014 edition of RT. (Click to read)

As Big Five O convention attendees may remember, the Canada Aviation and Space Museum’s currently in-progress restoration of Beaufighter RD867 is currently slated to be finished in the markings of Beaufighter NE355, commemorating its D-Day era markings as a 404 (RCAF) Squadron aircraft.

Updates from the CAHS and Friends Across Canada

Their Messerschmitt Bf-109 mock-up is almost ready to be placed on display. Associated signage will be completed over the winter. Emil Weinmann was a Luftwaffe fighter pilot, and the museum’s remarkable collection of his personal material will be part of the display. Researcher-to-Researcher

The Transportation Association of Canada is putting together an onsite and online exhibit on the past 100 years in aviation in Canada.
