Saint John, New Brunswick: First in the Air!
Aviation History buffs, the 2012 Conference of the Canadian Aviation Historical Society is taking place in Saint John NB from on September 5th to the 9th. This year's theme is "First in the Air, New Brunswick's Place In Canadian Aviation."
Conference Presentations will take place at the New Brunswick Museum and the Saint John Free Public Library at Market Square. There will also be an Aviation Art Show at the NB Museum Gallery and a Poster Session at the Saint John Regional Library. Aviation related activities will also take place in other related locations before and after the Conference itself.
Featured Topics: Aviation & the East Coast Seal Hunt; Saint John in Aviation History; The 80th Anniversary of the First East-to-West Trans-Atlantic Flight; New Brunswickers of Note in Canadian Aviation; Moncton in WWII; N.B. Air Crashes & Their Protection; NB´s Military History Museum’s Aviation Collection; Ted Cooper & Maritime Air Mail; Miller Brittain, DFC, War Artist; Civil Defence & Russian Bombers in Saint John & Halifax; Fundy Flying Club to Air Canada via the RCAF; Gina Jordan: Aviatrix Extraordinaire; Last Flight of the Edmundston Lancaster; Aviation Museums in Canada & Elsewhere. Our Banquet Speaker is Tom Appleton, Board Chairperson of Canada's Aviation Hall of Fame.
Special Activities: A Cenotaph Dedication at the Wade-Myles Aviation Park located at the Former Millidgeville Municipal Airport; An NB Museum Guided Tour of Rupert Turnbull's Workshop; A Sunday Memorial Service on the Site of the BCATP Pennfield Ridge Air Station. The Saint John Airport, in association with Vintage Wings, will be commemorating the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan with static displays and an air show. Featured as well will be a Canada’s Blue Birds Aero-Demonstration Team – as they practice in a virtual world.
While in Saint John you can take in some city walking and bus tours to enjoy our heritage architecture and experience “Stonehammer”, the only UNESCO designated Geo Park in North America. If the weather is favourable, you may be lucky enough to feel the vibrations of our fog horn from the site of the world’s first fog whistle.
Our hotel will be the Delta Brunswick located in the bustling Uptown within minutes of the conference sessions. The hotel is offering the conference rate of $100.00 per night for a standard room. This rate is also available for 3 days before and 3 days after our meeting. The hotel is accepting registration now for the conference and there are upgraded rooms available for additional cost. Our Hospitality Suite will be located in the hotel.
EARLY BIRD REGISTRATION DATE EXTENDED - Now July 25, 2012 (all entries recieved before this date will be entered in a draw for one night's accommodation).

Click here to see highlights of the 2011 Convention in Edmonton, Alberta.Last year, the Montreal Chapter hosted the 47th Annual Convention in beautiful Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, June 2nd to 5th. The theme was “Aviation in Montreal: Past and Present” and attendees were treated to a variety of speakers, tours, and events.
Some highlights
- Marc Garneau, Canada’s first astronaut, was the keynote speaker
- Tour and BBQ at the Canadian Aviation Heritage Centre
- A full day of tours to Aveos, the Bombardier Challenger plant, and Mechtronix.
- Several authors were on hand at the book fair to sign copies of their work

"Edmonton: Gateway to the North"
The CAHS headed west for its 2011 Convention. From June 22-26 2011, we enjoyed the best of western hospitality at the Chateau Nova Hotel & Suites, our convention headquarters, and explored the theme of Edmonton: Gateway to the North.
The evening of the 22nd, we hosted a meet & greet at the hotel – a great chance to reunite with colleagues and friends (and win some door prizes!). The 23rd we began our journey into Alberta’s aviation past in Wetaskiwin, home of the Reynolds-Alberta Museum and Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame. We also had rare behind-the-scenes access to the RAM warehouse!
During our two days of heavily-illustrated talks, we heard from dynamic speakers on a range of military, civilian, and aviation heritage topics. We also marked key anniversaries with our special events (for speaker bios and talk descriptions, click here). These weekend events, which tied in with the Alberta Aviation Museum’s popular AirFest, included a 1940s Swing Dance (with live big band music), a Northwest Staging Route-themed dinner, and a Stage & Screen evening. And of course AirFest itself the 26th!
